Like you, YWCA New Britain is largely staying home to ensure the health and safety of our staff and members. In an effort to stay connected and keep you engaged during this time, our departments have taken to virtual platforms to continue providing activities and resources YWhile We’re Home.
We have an active virtual community in the YWCA New Britain Wellness Group on Facebook, focusing on everything from nutrition and self-care to at-home exercises and motivation. Activities and discussions are led by our Membership and Wellness Director Heather Labbe. In addition, pre-recorded (and equipment free) barre, yoga, kickboxing, Pilates, and HIIT workouts are available on our YouTube channel.
Beginning May 1, fitness members can download the SugarWOD app to access exclusive curated content in four different tracks – workout of the day, nutrition, mind-body, and live group exercise. All four tracks are included in an all-access membership, while the workout of the day and nutrition tracks are included in a gym-only membership. Non-members can also download the app, getting the workout of the day for free with the option to purchase additional tracks à la carte.
Children at home can follow along with our teachers to a variety of pre-recorded activities. They can sing and dance to Ms. Virginia’s songs like “I’m a Little Teapot,” “Drive in Your Car and be a Star,” “Icky Sticky Bubble Gum,” and more. They can use common household items to make salt dough ornaments, play dough, and slime, or listen to a story read by Ms. Michele, Ms. Emily, Ms. Thea, Ms. Tina, or Ms. Nicole.
Our Sexual Assault Crisis Service (SACS) expanded its virtual crisis counseling services to include phone, text, and video options, aiming to make counseling more accessible at home. They also moved their support groups to virtual spaces, currently offering six different groups that survivors and their loved ones can RSVP for here. Options include Young Adults Survivors Group, Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Assault Group, Virtual Book Club, Moms Virtual Coffee Hour, LGBTQ+ Group, and LGBTQ+ Self Care Group.
